In Memoriam: A Tribute to Beck Chairman Harold R. (Bob) Beck
Bob Beck, Chairman of Harold Beck & Sons, Inc., age 89, passed away on September 3, 2019 in Oro Valley, AZ.
Bob was born in Philadelphia, PA to Harold C. Beck and Florence R. Beck on June 10, 1930. Bob attended Germantown Academy and then studied mechanical engineering and electronics at Lehigh University. However, he put his education on hold in 1951 to enlist in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War as a B-26 pilot. The war ended before he went into combat, and he returned home to join his father, Harold C. Beck, in the family business in 1956. His brother Bruce, who graduated from Cornell University with a degree in mechanical engineering, joined the company in 1959. Bob continued his education in electronics with night classes at Drexel University, eventually earning a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
Bob contributed to many areas of the company including Engineering, Manufacturing, Sales, and IT. He established important principles to govern our everyday activities as we design, manufacture, sell and service high quality electric actuators. Many of his ideas and processes are still used today.
Bob was an avid skier, enjoyed racing cars, flying aerobatic airplanes, tennis, golf, bicycling and reading. He attended Hope Church in Oro Valley, AZ and The Crossing Church in Washington Crossing, PA. He supported many Christian causes and organizations and was known for his willingness to help others in any way he could.
Bob is preceded in death by his brother Bruce C. Beck and his wife of 54 years Constance Beck. He is survived by his son Douglas Beck (Leah) and daughter Deborah Metroka (Michael), two grandchildren, one great grandchild and his wife Elaine Beck.
We will miss Bob but also celebrate his legacy.
